Captain Robert L. Martin was born in 1919 and raised in Dubuque. He graduated from Senior High School and went on to earn an Electrical Engineering degree from Iowa State University. He was accepted into the U.S. Army Corps in 1942 and transferred to the Tuskegee Army Airfield and became one of the original Tuskegee Airmen. Captain Martin flew multiple missions under the 100th fighter squadron, part of the all-black 332nd Fighter group. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart, Air Medal with 6 leaf oak clusters and as part of the Tuskegee Airmen he was present in Washington D.C. when they, as a group received – the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor.
On Tuesday, July 19, 2022 – we will be celebrating Captain Martin’s life and naming the Dubuque Regional Airport Terminal Building after him.
