Tom Keating is an acclaimed leader, educator and motivator. An expert on goal-setting, team-building, and coaching for success, Tom will share his personal stories of adversity, triumph, challenge and his journey of faith.
Tom has been involved with Catholic education for over 40 years as a student, teacher, coach, athletic director, and as principal at Xavier H.S. in Cedar Rapids (last 11 years). Tom spent 24 of those years at Wahlert H.S. where he taught Psychology, coached volleyball and served as athletic director. He is still a beloved member of the Wahlert family, even when Xavier gets the upper hand in sports events.
A native of Philadelphia, Mr. Keating earned his B.A. in psychology at Simpson College and holds a Master’s in Education Administration from Loras College. He has written four graduate courses for Drake University on goal-setting, team-building, parent-coach relationships and coaching for success. He has taught graduate courses on teaching and coaching.
Tom’s volleyball teams at Wahlert won 11 state championships. He was named National Volleyball Coach of the Year twice – in 2004 and 2005. He has been inducted into the Iowa Volleyball Coaches Hall of Fame and the National Association of Athletic Coaches Hall of Fame. He also serves on the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s Board of Control. The National Catholic Education Association named Tom one of six recipients of its “National Educator of the Year” award.
Tom and his wife Jodi have been married for 36 years. They have three sons, Kevin, Tim and Ryan. Tom lives by the belief that “we either get better or worse; we never stay the same.”
